Indiana Vets to Receive Hands-On Training to Combat Kitten Overpopulation
Feline Spay/Neuter Lab Coming to Elkhart County July 26
Bristol, IN (July 1, 2025) — As Indiana shelters face a flood of kittens, a new training event aims to tackle the crisis at its root: by empowering veterinarians to prevent unplanned litters before they happen.
On Saturday, July 26, Pet Friendly Services of Indiana, the Humane Society of Elkhart County, and United Spay Alliance will host a hands-on feline spay/neuter training for Indiana-licensed veterinarians. The all-day wet lab, held at the Humane Society of Elkhart County, will focus on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) techniques—proven methods that improve surgical efficiency without compromising care.
Veterinarians will receive expert instruction from experienced HQHVSN surgeons, building practical skills to help meet the overwhelming demand for affordable, preventative veterinary care across Indiana.
“Preventing unwanted litters is the only way to truly reduce the number of animals entering shelters,” said Cheri Storms, Executive Director of Pet Friendly Services of Indiana. “We’re committed to long-term solutions—not just quick fixes.”
That urgency is backed by national data: In 2024 alone, over 2.9 million cats entered U.S. shelters, and 57% of them were kittens younger than 5 months, according to Shelter Animals Count.
The need for prevention is critical—and HQHVSN-trained veterinarians are a key part of the solution.
