United Spay Alliance Urges Pet Parents to Vaccinate and Spay or Neuter Ahead of World Rabies Day 2026

WALKERSVILLE, Md., July 18, 2026 United Spay Alliance, a nationwide nonprofit that connects pet parents to affordable, accessible, and timely spay and neuter services, is calling on families across the country to protect their animals and their communities ahead of World Rabies Day, observed this year on Monday, September 28, 2026. This year’s global theme, Stronger Together, underscores that rabies elimination depends on coordinated action across communities, veterinary professionals, and public health systems.
Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear and nearly entirely preventable through vaccination. While vaccination remains the front line of defense, United Spay Alliance emphasizes a prevention measure often left out of the rabies conversation: spaying and neutering. Fewer litters mean fewer roaming, unvaccinated animals, which is the exact population through which rabies spreads.
“The rabies vaccine protects your pet, but spaying and neutering protects the whole community,” said a spokesperson for United Spay Alliance. “Every unfixed litter becomes the next generation of unvaccinated, free-roaming animals. Reducing that population at the source is upstream rabies prevention, and it is a public health tool we cannot afford to overlook.”

Guidance for Pet Parents
United Spay Alliance reminds pet parents of several key facts drawn from CDC rabies data and national surveillance reporting:
Vaccination is affordable and widely available. Rabies vaccines typically cost between 15 and 35 dollars at low-cost clinics, and many shelters and counties offer free vaccination days.
Indoor pets are not exempt. A single rabid bat entering a home can infect an unvaccinated cat, so pets should be vaccinated regardless of lifestyle.
Lapsed vaccines carry serious consequences. A pet is not considered protected until 28 days after its first shot, and is no longer current one day past a booster due date. An unvaccinated pet that is exposed may face euthanasia or a four-month quarantine.
Spaying and neutering reduces long-term risk. By shrinking the population of unvaccinated, free-roaming animals, spay and neuter procedures help lower the community-wide risk of rabies transmission.
