Spring Forward: A Smarter Approach to Kitten Season

Each year, as the days get longer and warmer, shelters and rescuers brace for an all-too-familiar flood: kitten season. It’s predictable. It’s overwhelming. And it’s preventable—if we act early and work smarter.

This spring – and all year long – we’re focused on proactive, practical solutions to reduce unplanned litters and support the people working hardest to care for cats and their communities.

We believe that with widespread access to affordable spay/neuter, we can end kitten season once and for all.

What would we do without kitten season?

Instead of shelters and rescues scrambling to keep up – overwhelmed with pregnant moms and orphaned kittens, and too few resources to help – we envision a future without the flood. A future where those precious, limited resources can be directed to the animals who truly need them. A future where every cat and kitten has the chance to thrive.

An end to kittens having kittens.

The reality is that kittens can get pregnant as early as four months old. That means we’re seeing kittens having kittens – and the cycle begins again.

That’s why we encourage veterinarians to talk with their clients early about the best time to spay/neuter – before five months of age.

Feline Fix by Five is a national campaign for anyone who wants to help cats and kittens by promoting early-age spay/neuter as the most effective intervention. It prevents not only unwanted litters, but also serious health risks like mammary cancer, and unwanted behaviors like roaming, yowling, and spraying.

You can help!

If you’re a veterinarian, talk to your clients with kittens about spaying and neutering before five months. You may even consider offering a Fix by Five discount this spring! One fun idea: take 1/5th (or 20%) off the price of a kitten’s spay/neuter surgery in honor of the campaign.

If you’re an organization, you might consider adding Feline Fix by Five messaging to your website or communications. Check out this postcard from Pet Friendly Services of Indiana!

Whether you’re an individual, organization, or veterinary provider, you can spread the word. Use our Media Kit to find ready-to-use graphics, talking points, and resources to share on your website, in your clinic, or across social media.

Together, we can build a future where kitten season doesn’t feel like a crisis—but a call to take smarter, earlier, and more effective action for cats and the communities who care for them.
